School Excursions for Food Studies Students

We have built a strong reputation for our specialised, tailored programs for students studying Year 11 and 12 Food Studies and TAFE Certificate 3 & 4 Commercial Cookery courses. Over the past decade, we have developed hands on learning experiences that include guided tours of the native foods display garden, an introduction to the culinary uses of a range of native foods and the opportunity for everyone to get involved in making a range of dishes to be shared at the conclusion of the class.

About Julie Weatherhead

Julie Weatherhead runs the Native Pantry cooking classes and is a native food plant specialist. She has over twenty years experience in growing and cooking with Australia’s unique edible plants. Her research has focused particularly on the nutritional, environmental and culinary properties of these foods. She prepares all the food for our regular Tour and Taste lunches at the farm.

An experienced adult educator for over thirty years, Julie is an ecologist and environmental scientist and also a  keen gardener and cook who enjoys incorporating the delicious flavours of Australia’s native foods into culinary delights for the table. Her classes are interactive and informative.

In 2016, she published Australian Native Food Harvest: a guide for the passionate cook and gardener, which details how to grow and cook with native bushfoods.
