Basket Weaving Workshop – April 1

Join renowned Gippsland Aboriginal artist and weaver Cassie Leatham in a new workshop where you will learn basket weaving techniques using natural materials grown at Peppermint Ridge to create your own woven basket. Workshop features include morning tea and lunch, and a tour of the native food garden and nursery.
Cassie Leatham is from the Taungurung – Wurundjeri tribes of the Kulin Nation and was born and lives on Gunai Kurnai country. Cassie is an established artist in a variety of different mediums and has work at the National Gallery of Victoria and Melbourne museum. Cassie facilitates workshops at the Koorie heritage trust and travels all over Victoria and interstate teaching her traditional skills in her culture. Cassie is a skilled Weaver and is a member of the Victorian Aboriginal Weaving Collective and has works in the first 2017 exhibition ‘Weaving Country’ held at Footscray Community Art Centre for the Wominjeka festival. Cassie weaves with native grasses, emu feathers, bird feathers, Paperbark and other mediums. Nurturing Culture for future generations and sharing with non indigenous participants is what Cassie enjoys, to break down barriers and pass on knowledge.
